MILA FAMILY VINEYARD
Located nine miles northeast of Healdsburg, between the Russian River and Gird Creek, this 54-acre wine farm is enveloped by lush forests and neighboring vineyards. The coastal mornings and evening fogs infuse the fruit with vibrant freshness, complemented by abundant sunshine and average summer temperatures of 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which contribute to the development of rich flavors. The challenging terrain consists of steep grades, rocky soils, and shallow depths, offering a unique test for the vines. The hillside encompasses a diverse range of topographies, aspects, elevations, slopes, and at least a dozen soil types. Emphasizing the preservation of the site's natural attributes, the vine rows are closely spaced, and the family upholds the principles of biodynamics—a holistic and herbal agricultural approach that predates the organic movement. Biodynamic farming revives traditional methods employed for thousands of years before the First World War. Instead of relying on fertilizers, cover crops were cultivated for five years prior to planting grapevines to ensure soil health. Each rootstock and grape variety is meticulously matched to its specific location, while natural defenses such as composts and habitats for beneficial species eliminate the need for pesticides.
